Scammer Demands Green Dot Money Pack Payment
On Monday, August 22, 2016, we received a complaint from a resident who fell victim to a telephone scam in which the suspect claimed to be from Ohio Edison and First Energy. The suspect advised the victim that he was past due on paying his electric bill and that his electricity would be shut off if he did not immediately pay the bill. The suspect demanded payment in Green Dot Money Pack prepaid credit cards.
When the victim complied with the suspect’s initial request for payment, the suspect claimed to have been mistaken in the amount owed telling the victim that he actually owed even more on his bill.
Fearing that his electricity would be cut off, the victim complied with the suspect’s demands. In the end, the victim was scammed out of over $6,300.
Residents are reminded not to send money to anyone who calls you in this manner. Ohio Edison / First Energy does not demand payment only in prepaid credit card numbers. Take the time to verify that you have legitimate business with anyone calling you demanding money by calling the official number you have on file for that company.
Again, residents should be wary of anyone who calls you on the phone demanding payment by unorthodox methods such as gift cards or prepaid credit cards.
