Fraudulent eBay Auto Sales Scammer Demands Green Dot Cards as Payment

By In Scam Alerts On August 22, 2017

On 8/21/2017, a resident reported being scammed by a fake eBay auto sales listing.  The seller claimed to be selling a 2010 Toyota Camry from Omaha, Nebraska.  Via email, the seller demanded that the buyer pay him $2,000 in Green Dot money cards.  The victim sent him the card numbers via email.  The scammer then promptly ceased all contact with the victim.

This is a common scam that we have received multiple similar reports on.  Buyers are reminded to never pay anyone in this manner.  Use forms of payment with online buyer protection.  DO NOT PAY IN GIFT CARDS in this manner.

Also, purchases of items listed on sites such as eBay that are not completed on the site themselves are more than likely not covered by any buyer protection policies of such sites.  Contacting a seller directly and completing a transaction via email will likely void any buyer protection offered by such sites.
