Fake Virus Popup Window Scam
On April 2, 2018, we received a report from a victim who was scammed out of $1,000. The victim clicked a link while browsing Facebook on his iPhone and received a popup message which claimed his phone had a virus on it. The message directed the victim to call a phone number for technical support to remove the virus. Upon calling the number, scammers directed the victim to purchase $1,000 in iTunes gift cards to pay for virus removal. The victim complied because he thought he was dealing with Apple customer support.
This is a variation of the same well-known scam. Scammers trick victims into sending them gift card numbers. Legitimate companies do not contact you in this manner and do not demand payment in iTunes gift cards. Please speak with your friends, family members, and loved ones about this well-known scam and advise them not to trust anyone who demands payment in this manner.
