Fake Relative in Trouble Needs Gift Cards to Pay Lawyer

By In Scam Alerts On August 25, 2017

On 8/24/2017, we received a report from an elderly, 88-year old resident that was scammed out of $8,000.  The victim received a call from a man claiming to be her nephew.  The suspect (who was not the victim’s nephew) claimed he was in trouble and needed $8,000 to pay his lawyer.  He instructed the victim to get $8,000 in target gift cards and to provide him the numbers over the phone.  The victim complied only to later find out the suspect was not a relative.

If you’ve been reading along through our scam alerts, you’ve no doubt noticed that the vast majority of scams perpetrated involve payment in gift cards.  Elderly residents frequently fall for these types of confidence schemes.  Please discuss this type of situation with your elderly friends, neighbors, and relatives.  Advise them NOT to provide gift card numbers to anyone over the phone and not to pay anyone who demands payment in gift cards.
