Craigslist Rental Property Scam
On April 23, 2016, we received a report from a citizen regarding a rental property scam involving his own property listed fraudulently for rent on Craigslist.
The citizen reported that he recently legitimately listed a property he owns for rent on another rental site. Shortly thereafter, the citizen found his property fraudulently listed for rent on Craigslist.
The fraudulent Craigslist listing had instructions to disregard the rental sign posted in front of the property because it was from an old realtor. The fraudulent listing instead instructed interested parties to call a different phone number and to fill out an online application that they provide requesting first month’s rent.
Though common sense alarms should sound for anyone reading this listing, we advise our residents to be wary of such listings on Craigslist or other such sites.
Do not send payment to anyone who anonymously requests payments online in this manner.
