Do The Right Thing Program
The Lorain Police Department is proud to announce the beginning of a new program known as the Do The Right Thing Program. Do The Right Thing is a non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing students within the community who are doing good things. Nowadays, so much emphasis is placed on what kids do wrong, that the Lorain Police Department thought it was time to start acknowledging what kids do right. The program is designed to positively impact the youth of our area by publicly recognizing children who distinguish themselves through their behavior and by establishing them as role models for their peers.

Domestic Violence Victim Rights Information
If a member of your family has caused you or your child(ren) physical harm, you have the right to tell a police officer that you want the person arrested or, based on probable cause, the officer may make an arrest on your behalf. You have the right to sign a complaint against the person who hurt you and/or your child(ren). Your complaint will allow the officer to make an arrest even though the officer did not see the assault take place.

C.O.P.S. Program
Since 1993 the C.O.P.S. Unit (Community Oriented Policing Squad) has been collaborating with the Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority. The Unit is comprised of three patrolmen under the supervision of one sergeant. The C.O.P.S. Unit is assigned to the Leavitt Home, Westview Terrace, and The Southside Gardens Public Housing Developments. The duties of a Community Police Officer include interaction with the residents in the identification of problems within the community and the formation of a solution to solve problems; joining forces and forming a partnership with local businesses, government, social, and educational institutions in the education of the community and introducing a relatively new form of policing that fits the specific needs of a neighborhood. Several events sponsored include the Junior Olympics, Kid- Care Identification Program, Safety Talks, and the newly formed Bicycle Patrol Unit. Emphasis is on tenant concerns with an emphasis on youth.

Halloween Program
In 1996, the Lorain Police Department and FOP encouraged the return of Night time trick-or-treat. The City Administration supported the idea. Halloween safety speeches were provided to all Lorain City Schools and Halloween Safety bags (that glow in the dark) were provided city wide. This event has been extremely successful. Volunteer police and auxiliary officers have created a safe environment for the children and turned it into a fun "community day" enjoyed by all.

School Resource Officer Program
The School Resource Officer (SRO) program enables the Lorain Police Department and the Lorain City Schools to take a preventive approach to school violence in a proactive manner that stresses the positive relationship with the SRO and builds on the education of students in law related matters. The SRO serves in three main capacities: l) As a law enforcement officer 2) As a law-related counselor 3) As a law-related education teacher. In addition to these three primary roles, the SRO provides a positive role model for students, many of whom have pre-conceived ideas regarding "authority figures" and particularly law-enforcement personnel.

Crime in the Lorain City School District is low. According to arecent study done by a consultant and former FBI agent, Lorain is above average nationwide in terms of security in its schools. The goal of the SRO program is to maintain that position and to continue to ensure the safety and security of students as they complete their education.

Safety Town
Our Safety Town Program is a one week course that is designed to teach your child safe practices both at school and at home. The children are instructed on when, where, and how to cross the street. They are taught school bus safety, fire safety, poison control, and how to handle strangers. Safety Town is conducted Monday thru Friday, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Lorain Police Explorers
The purpose of the Exploring program is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to explore the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and in their communities. If you have an interest in the career of Law Enforcement, then joining a Police Explorer Post is your first step towards a exciting and fullfilling career in police work. Law Enforcement Exploring is only an introduction to the police profession. Career surveys conducted in high schools throughout the country demonstrate a significant level of student interest in law enforcement and criminal justice.

If you are interested in a career in Law Enforcement and are between the ages of 14 and 18, and of good character, and have no criminal record, and have completed the 8th grade, maintain a C average, why not join the Lorain Police Explorer Post # 911, and be on your way to a career in Law Enforcement. Today, there are more than 33,000 young men and women participating in Law Enforcement Explorer programs in over 1,800 Law Enforcement Explorer Posts organized by local law enforcement agencies.
