Patrolman George Kirk, 57, refused to ride in a police car because he enjoyed nabbing burglars walking the night Broadway beat. Patrolman Kirk was found face down at the bottom of an elevator shaft. The elevator was at the second floor of the Lorain Hardware warehouse and to this day, no one can explain why the door to the shaft was unlocked and found open a scant 18 inches. Patrolman Kirk’s death remains a mystery to this day.
