KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Officer Charles Deal

November 6, 1925

Patrolman Charles Deal, 39, was struck by a hit-skip driver and knocked 10 feet into the air. Patrolman Deal was directing traffic at the scene of an auto-truck accident on the Lorain-Elyria highway. The driver fled the scene as Patrolman Deal lay injured on the roadway. Patrolman Deal’s cries for help and transportation to the hospital were ignored by the next five cars to pass. Patrolman Deal died of his injuries enroute to St. Joseph Hospital. On November 9, 1925, a 19 year old Lorain youth was brought to the police station by his father and surrendered to face manslaughter charges. In January, 1926, the grand jury failed to indict the youth.
